This event is at our new off-grid location in the Yarra Valley, approximately one hour from Melbourne.
THE ONES WHO WALK AWAY FROM OMELAS
What does your happiness depend on? At what cost does comfort come? Science fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin asked these questions long ago in her chillingly prescient short story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. Published in 1973, the parable is set in an idyllic land where the beautiful and intelligent inhabitants of Omelas want for nothing. This will be a group reading and discussion.
"Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty." Henri David Thoreau
There has never been a better time to disobey. Across Australia, people are bending and breaking the rules to change the course of history to one that is compassionate, just and safe. Learn about the philosophy of non-violence and the role of civil disobedience in defending the right to clean air, water, a safe climate and social justice. This workshop on civil disobedience will also be a practical introduction to strategies, co-ordination, tactics and negotiation.
Nicola Paris is an experienced trainer in non-violent direct action, supporting communities to take effective, creative, strategic action on issues of environmental and social justice.
